论坛主旨 Premises
当今不断扩张的城市常被诟病为丑陋。尽管人们如此评判，日常生活中我们却总能轻易发现美——一把设计精良、工艺考究的椅子，一件实用又简洁优雅的工具，或是一栋旧农舍。美，似乎既无处不在，又难以寻见。这既取决于历史时代，也取决于观察对象的尺度——是那些被容纳之物，还是作为容器的房屋本身。
长久以来，美一直是建筑设计和建造最重要的目标之一，对某些理论家和设计师而言，它甚至是最高追求。但对我们而言，是否依然如此？今天，当人们驻足于建筑前或穿行其中时，美是否仍是评判的重要标准？还是说，在我们如今对诸如社会公平、环境正义这类重大议题的焦虑与关注下，美的命题已失去其原有的批判与认知价值？可持续解决方案往往缺乏美感，低造价大量性住宅不去考量审美愉悦，我们难道可以对这些熟视无睹？鉴于建筑学对“体验"的普遍推崇，人们或许会认为美——作为个人情感的投射——理应在建筑、景观与城市的讨论中占据核心地位。然而现实是，功能需求、经济制约、环境正义与社会责任等考量，往往将美学关切推向边缘。我们——或你——是否必须在"表观"与"功用"之间做出非此即彼的选择，且后者才是首要关注？建筑之美，是否已成为我们无力承担的奢侈？
当我们讨论建筑中“美”这一问题时，往往面临这些模糊与困难。希望参与本次论坛的博士生、博士后和年轻教师们，能够以自己从事的研究来展示克服这种状态的可能路径。虽然美的议题并非多数研究的核心，但以此 视角来重新审视自己的研究材料，或许能为现有工作带来新的启发，这不仅在于促进不同研究进路与研究主题间的对话，也表现在写作的形式层面——因为，在建筑实体的美学外，研究、论证、写作与传播的过程亦蕴含美学。我们同样欢迎关于建筑书籍、理论、评论、展览、摄影及影像之美的探讨。
A common complaint about today’s ever-expanding cities is that they are often rather ugly. Despite this judgment, we have little trouble describing various things and events in everyday life as beautiful—a chair that’s been well-designed and crafted, a tool that is both useful and elegantly simple, or an old farmhouse. Beauty, it would seem, is alternately all around us and hard to find, depending on the historical period and on the scale of what one is looking at—things housed or the house itself.
For centuries, beauty has been one of the important aims of architectural design and construction, for some writers and designers it was the highest aim. Is it so for us? Is beauty still an important category of judgment when one stands before or moves through a building today, or has the topic lost its relevance and role in our criticism and understanding, given all our anxieties about and focus on really big issues, such as social or environmental justice? Does it matter that sustainable solutions are often unattractive, that the provision of shelter for the unhoused typically does not include considerations of aesthetic enjoyment? With the widespread dedication to ‘experience’ in architecture in mind, one might think that beauty, a matter of personal sentiment, would be centrally important in discussions of buildings, landscapes, and cities. Yet, concerns for functional needs, economic constraints, environmental justice, and social responsibilities often seem to marginalize aesthetic concerns. Do we—do you—feel there is a choice between appearance and purpose, that the latter should be our principal concern? Is architectural beauty something we can no longer afford?
Ph.D. students who make presentations in this Forum are asked to discuss ways in which their research may help us think through the ambiguities and difficulties of addressing the matter of beauty in architecture. This topic is, of course, hardly central in most research projects. But asking such a question of one’s study materials may provide new insights into current research work, in the question of the formal aspects of writing, in addition to providing a basis for communication between different approaches and themes. Besides the aesthetics of architectural objects, there is also an aesthetics of researching, arguing, writing and communicating. Contributions are welcome that deal with the beauty of architectural books, theories, critiques, exhibitions, photographs, and films.
